Back and Biceps (Muscular Strength)

There are actually two different categories for muscular composition: muscular strength and muscular endurance. Both are equally important and are concepts of the 5 Health Related Fitness Components. Today was a great day to focus on muscular strength. The difference between the two is simple. Muscular strength is less reps and more weight. Muscular endurance is more reps and less weight.

Since I focused on muscular strength I was only performing 6-8 reps of each exercise. It is good to mix up your routine and reps because our bodies adjust to what we do. By switching it up and trying new things we are making our muscles think and work harder. This allows you to get the best results. Do not be afraid to lift heavy. There are many misconceptions of how women gain muscle mass. Check out this blog by Chris Freytag if you are concerned with becoming too bulky.

  1. when either endurance or strength do you do a full body or do you isolate parts day by day? and if you do full body is it better to do endurance or strength? only reason i ask is because i'm trying to get back in the weight room and trying to figure out which way to go.

    1. Hey Malcom, Thanks for checking out my blog! That is a great question. I do not do full body when I focus on strength. I like to focus on muscles that work well together. For example, I will do back with biceps. I switch it up a lot though. Switching up your workout and exercises is a great way to stay motivated and have fun in the gym! If you are doing full body, I suggest working with endurance and making it more of a cardio workout. Getting back into the weight room can be difficult. Your first step is to create a goal! After creating a goal, work from there to achieve it. Check out this link and it will tell you how to creat a S.M.A.R.T goal!

  2. Hey Tennille, I know for me I usually just pair the two terms together, but you bring up a good point that the terms are similar but they focus on different aspects of your workout. I think I knew that I just never realized that I incorporate both in my workouts. Usually if I'm working on shoulders I'll do shrugs 10-12 reps with 30lbs, and when I want to step it up I add another 5 or 10 lbs and only do 5-6 reps. This is a nice reminder that before you work out, it's nice to have a plan on what you want to focus on, your strength or your endurance.

  5. Hey, nice post Tennille! Great info, and I like how you broke it down to show how simple it really is. A lot of people over think things and try to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Focusing on specific muscle groups each workout is great when trying to build strength, while spreading it out more for full body muscular endurance is very beneficial. Always keep mixing it up and making it interesting so that your body is guessing whats next. Keep up the good work!

  6. Great post! It's really important for people to know the difference between muscular strength and muscular endurance especially when you want certain results. I focus on muscular strength a lot more now. My biggest issue is worrying about getting to bulky. Chris Freytag's blog was very helpful and so is yours!
